Rust has eaten into its sides, and the metal bears the marks of many years. Yet in this warm light, even the enormous hull loses some of its weight. The water lies so still around it, as though keeping a secret.

What the Sea Has Left Behind

A strange contradiction held my attention in this place. A ship is built to travel. This one completed its final journey long ago, yet it still seems to be waiting for something. The lines of the hull lead out into the light, while its shadow disappears deep into the water.

When I look at the photograph, I think less about decay than about what remains of stories. Not every trace reveals what happened. Some simply remind us that something was once there.

Behind the Work

In the accompanying photography project, I show which photographic decisions give this image its particular sense of calm.

Discover how it was made ↗

← All selected works

Ein Schiffswrack im warmen Licht Norwegens.
