Berlin. Streets full of voices, sirens, parties, stress and life. Nights brighter than some days. The underground railway as a pulse, asphalt beneath my shoes, the smell of rain on hot concrete. That was my everyday life. My noise. My home.

Today, twenty-five years later, I stand on the Norwegian coast, far from the rhythm of the city, the shouting, the car horns and the constant demands. Yet sometimes, when everything falls quiet, it returns: homesickness.

Not often. It used to come more frequently, almost regularly. Now it is rare. But when it comes, it feels like an old friend appearing at the door without saying a word, simply looking at me.

That was how it felt on this day. The sea lay before me as smooth as if it had been ironed. No waves, no wind, just a flat silver surface, as though the world had forgotten to move.
The sky wore a tired blue, and I felt it returning right then: the moment when I miss Berlin.

I reached for my camera, not to distract myself, but to give that feeling a face.

At f/11, ISO 100 and a shutter speed of 30 seconds, I let the photograph breathe. I wanted to calm the movement and make the flow visible. The sea turned soft, the sky became a sheet of fabric and the coastline a contour slowly dissolving.

In the foreground lay a dark rock, worn by the water and marked by time. Immovable. Somehow familiar. It was what I sometimes feel I have become: quiet, but not empty. More composed, but not cold.

The photograph does not tell a story outright, but it carries one. A quiet story that remains.

Homesickness, for me, is not a call to return. I do not want to go back to the streets of my past. But sometimes I miss who I was there, what surrounded me: the sound of the city, the smell of its mornings, the rush between two underground stations.

Then I stand here beside this quiet sea and feel both things at once: the absence and the discovery, the past and the present. And in that tension, a picture emerges that means more than photography alone.

It is an echo. A memory. A quiet greeting to the life I once led, and a thank-you to the life I lead today.

When the sea falls silent, it brings back not only the past, but the question of who we have become since leaving.

Ich war einmal ein Mensch der Großstadt.
