Old wood slowly decays on the forest floor while new life is already growing beside it. Through it all, water finds its own way.

Places like these fascinate me. Perhaps because we encounter them less and less often: forests allowed to look the way a forest wants to look. Without cleared ground, straight lines, or any sense that someone has decided which tree may stay and which must go.

Yet standing in such a forest with my camera presents a very different challenge.

What looks beautiful to the eye can quickly become a jumble in a photograph. Lines, textures and tiny details everywhere. Every branch seems to compete with the next for attention. Bright leaves sit beside deep shadows, tree trunks overlap, and somewhere in between I try to find a calm composition.

I don't need to impose order on the forest. I need to discover it.

In this photograph, it was the water. The bright stream leads through the darkness, past large rocks and into the forest. Suddenly, all those trunks, stones and shadows had a direction. A small pocket of calm within the apparent chaos.

And I allowed the darkness to remain.

In the forest, I sometimes feel we try to reveal too much in our photographs. Every tree, every texture, every detail is meant to be visible. But a forest also contains places where the light never reaches. Shadows, depth, and things that escape our gaze.

For me, that darkness is as much a part of its beauty as the green leaves or the bright water in the stream.

Perhaps it is what makes a natural forest mysterious in the first place.

If you stay there a while, your perception begins to change. Small relationships emerge from the initial tangle. Lines become visible. Patches of light appear. A stone suddenly takes on meaning. The eye begins to find its own path through the forest.

Eventually, the chaos no longer feels chaotic at all.

Perhaps a forest like this simply follows an order that has nothing to do with our idea of order.

And that is exactly what makes it so beautiful.

Manche Wälder wirken, als hätten sie jede Vorstellung von Ordnung längst vergessen.
