The Colours Before the Silence

Herbstliche Berglandschaft in Norwegen mit goldbraunen Bäumen am See und Wolken über den Gipfeln.

Autumn has its own way of saying goodbye. It arrives in colours that seem warmer than the light of summer. In golden leaves, cool mornings and a sky that grows a little heavier with each passing day. For a brief time, it transforms the landscape into something extraordinary, before slowly beginning to take all those colours away again.

When I stood before this mountain landscape, autumn already seemed to be halfway through its farewell. Clouds rested above the peaks as the last light found its way through the sky. Along the shore, the trees still glowed in warm shades of yellow and brown. Between them lay the dark water, almost motionless, as though even the lake could sense that something was changing.

It is a curious time of year. Summer has long since gone, but winter is still holding back. The days grow shorter, the light loses its summer harshness, and nature seems to be slowing to a pace of its own. Everything feels a little quieter, almost as if the landscape itself were growing tired.

I love these days. Perhaps even more than those when autumn sunshine bathes everything in gold. To me, the dark sky, heavy clouds and last warm colours tell a much deeper story. Autumn does not reserve its beauty for sunny days. Sometimes it lives in a brief strip of light moving across a mountainside. In the quiet rustle of the final leaves. Or in that strange feeling when the landscape seems to hover between two seasons. Everything looks familiar, yet already a little different.

Perhaps that is why autumn moves me so deeply. It makes visible what we so often prefer to forget in everyday life: nothing lasts forever, even the most beautiful moments pass, and change is part of being alive. The leaves will fall and the warm colours will fade. In time, the first cold nights will arrive, bringing the landscape that particular stillness only winter knows.

But that moment has not arrived yet. The trees by the water are still glowing. Light is still finding its way through the clouds. A final trace of warmth still rests on the mountain slopes. These are the fleeting moments that draw me outdoors with my camera, again and again. Moments that cannot be planned or held onto. All you can do is try to bring a little of them home. A photograph, a memory, or simply the feeling of having been in the right place at the right time.

Soon the colours will fade and the landscape will grow quieter. The mountains will remain, the water will darken, and the last leaves will let go. What glows golden today may already be gone tomorrow.

And perhaps that is where autumn's particular beauty lies for me. It gives us one last glimpse of its full splendour, while reminding us how precious the things are that cannot stay.

The colours before the silence.
