Back When Everything Seemed Right

Sunshine on her face. Snow in the background. A smile that seems completely natural.

This photograph shows Crown Princess Mette-Marit more than ten years ago. Back then, I was still using a DSLR. The camera was set to automatic mode. I did not think much about settings. I simply pressed the shutter.

When we look back at moments from the past, it is easy to say: everything was fine back then. But was it really? Or does it only seem that way because we did not yet know what would happen next?

A photograph captures a moment, not a life. It shows the surface, not everything moving beneath it. We see a person in the light and forget that every light also casts shadows.

Times change. Roles change. The photograph remains.

Perhaps that is what unsettles us. We believe a photograph tells the truth, when in fact it tells only part of the story. It shows how something was, not everything that is.

Anyone who lives in the public eye is constantly watched. Not only in the warm light of admiration, but under the harsh spotlight of criticism. The media and the public look for stories, and sometimes a person becomes a headline far more quickly than they become understood.

But this is not just about particular individuals. It says something about all of us: how we deal with photographs, rumours, and judgements, and how quickly we reach our conclusions.

Perhaps it is easier to focus on others than to question ourselves. Easier to point a finger than to consider our own responsibility in the way we treat people in public.

“Everything was fine back then” may be less a truth about the past than a wish for a time when we were slower to judge.

The photograph remains still. It asks for nothing. It passes no judgement.

And perhaps that is precisely its greatest strength.

  3. Hallo Dirk,

      Dirk
