When I took this photograph in the Lofoten Islands, I was unsure at first. The image looked bright. Almost too bright. The atmosphere of that particular evening was barely visible in the photograph.
Yet I had felt it clearly while standing there.
It was midnight. The sea lay calm beneath the cliffs. The sun itself had long since disappeared from my view, but its light remained. It rested on the rocks, the water, and the shadows of the landscape. A kind of light that belongs to no ordinary time of day.
Only during editing did the photograph begin to change.
With each adjustment, more detail returned.
The rocks gained depth. The sea gained weight. And slowly, the atmosphere I remembered began to appear.
That led me to an interesting realisation: brightness alone does not create the feeling of light. It is the shadows that make it visible.
Only where light meets darkness does it gain its effect.
Perhaps that is why photography still fascinates me.
A photograph rarely shows only what stood in front of the camera. It also carries something of what we felt.
Sometimes that feeling is visible the moment we press the shutter. Sometimes it waits until editing.
That evening, it waited.
And in the end, it was that light that stayed.

Dirk

Such a beautiful sight! If only those rocks could speak to us, imagine the stories they could tell us! Stories of the eons of time they have sat and watched pass by.

Thank you so much, John! I had a very similar thought while looking at them. These rocks seem like silent witnesses to an almost unimaginable amount of time. Just imagine all the changes, storms and stories they have experienced over the ages.
