The Fortress in the Mist

When I first saw this hut that day, it was just a subject. A brief stop on the way up. A few photographs. A look across the landscape. Then I continued.

The real destination was higher up.

The mountains partly disappeared into the mist. The rocks seemed rough and unwelcoming. A landscape with little interest in whether people happen to pass through it.

That is exactly what I like about places like this. They were not made for us. They simply exist.
Silent. Wild. Unmoved.

When I reached the summit later, the weather changed. Slowly at first. Then very quickly.

Clouds rolled over the mountains. The wind grew stronger. And an ordinary descent suddenly became a race against the approaching storm.
The mountain sent me back, faster than I had planned.

When the hut came into view again, it was no longer a photographic subject. It had become something else: shelter, warmth, a place to catch my breath while wind, rain and hail battered the walls outside.

Perhaps that is why I like this photograph so much today. I see more than the hut.

I hear the wind. I feel the cold.

I remember the moment when this little stone hut suddenly mattered more than the summit itself.

Sometimes it is not the grand destinations that stay with us. Sometimes it is the places in between. The places we hardly noticed at first.
And which later tell the whole story.

  1. Lieber Dirk,

      Dirk

  2. Excellent photo and thoughts, Dirk. I’m glad that the shelter was there for you.

    1. Thank you, John. Yes, I was really happy that this little shelter was there. In that moment it felt much less like just a subject for a photo and much more like a very welcome place to hide from the storm.
Glad you like the image and the story behind it.
      Best,
      Dirk

  3. Great photo and refuge.

    1. Thank you, Anne. Yes, it really was a refuge that day. First it caught my eye as a photo subject, and a little later it became a very welcome place to hide from the weather.
      Glad you like it.
