Lonely Country Roads

Even the journey to my photography locations is often an experience in itself.
Sometimes I set off early, when fog lies over the fields and the world is still quiet. At other times I drive late in the evening, when the last light brushes the mountains and the landscape slowly fades into darkness.

On the Way to Quiet Photography Locations

This country road, somewhere in the wide Norwegian landscape, was my first stop that day. Fog hung heavily between the trees, sunlight glimmered faintly through the mist, and dew still shone on the asphalt. No movement, no sound. Just that moment between day and night.

I love places like this, far from everything, where the landscape still feels untouched. In sparsely populated areas, you begin to see differently. Quiet gives you permission to pause, observe the light and wait. No traffic, no distractions: just the road, the fog and the camera.

Sometimes the quietest yet most powerful photographs are made right here. Not at the place I was heading for, but along the way, on these lonely roads where light and atmosphere meet unexpectedly.

I describe how I discover places like these in my article The Art of Finding Photography Locations.

      Dirk
