Norge er oss - Farewell to King Harald V

Dunkle norwegische Stabkirche in Schwarz-Weiß

Today, King Harald V passed away.

As I look at this photograph of an old stave church, I find myself thinking about what remains of a person when their time comes to an end. The church stands dark and quiet in the landscape. It tells of an older Norway, of history, faith and tradition, of things that existed long before us and will probably remain long after we are gone.

King Harald was part of that history. At the same time, I always found his view of Norway remarkably open and modern.

I have never forgotten his speech in the Palace Park in 2016. He spoke about who belongs to Norway, about origins, differences, love and faith.

And a little later:

Nordmenn tror p

Those words mattered to me.

I was not born in Norway. I moved here when I was thirty-two. Perhaps that is why his words touched me so deeply. In his understanding of Norway, belonging was not only a matter of where someone came from.

It was about the people who live here, about their differences and about accepting those differences while remaining one country.

At the end of his speech were three simple words:

Norge er oss. (Norway is us.)

Perhaps that is why this particular stave church feels right for this day. It stands for the history of this country and its old traditions. At the same time, King Harald showed that tradition and openness need not be opposites.

A country can preserve its history while still making room for people of different origins, beliefs and ways of life. These thoughts feel particularly valuable to me today.

The photograph is dark. Only parts of the old church emerge from the black.

Perhaps it is the same with people. Eventually, they leave us.

But sometimes their words, their values and something of what they stood for remain.

Thank you, King Harald.

Norge er oss.

    1. Vielen Dank, Karin.

  8. King Harald was proof that the monarchy remains relevant today in a democratic country. This is a sad time for Norway.

    1. Hi, Thank you for your thoughtful words. I agree, King Harald gave the monarchy a very human face. With dignity, warmth and humility, he showed that tradition can still have meaning in a modern democratic society.
It is indeed a sad time for Norway.
