Before Awakening

Quiet Norwegian coastline shortly before sunrise

PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT · THE JOURNEY TO AN IMAGE

It was still early when I reached the beach. The day had barely begun, and almost nothing could be heard beyond the sound of the sea. No people, no voices, no traces of the day that would change this place a little later.

I love these hours by the water. The light is subdued, the air clear, and even the waves seem to follow a different rhythm. Some images were made handheld, others with long exposures. For me, this series tells of that brief time when a familiar beach still feels like another world.

The film behind the photography project

In the film, I show what I noticed along the way and which decisions led to the photographs.

The photographic challenges

Using the First Light

The tour began very early. The soft light before and during sunrise was an essential part of my vision for the photographs. It changes rapidly and leaves only a narrow window for some compositions.

Finding Stillness in Movement

The sea is never truly still. By choosing different shutter speeds, I could decide how much of its movement would remain visible. Long exposures turn waves into soft surfaces; shorter ones preserve their rhythm.

Composing an Almost Empty Beach

An empty sandy beach may seem simple at first. That very emptiness is a photographic challenge. Lines in the sand, individual stones, streams of water, and the edge of the surf must be enough to hold the image together.

Images from the project

The photographs reveal different forms, lighting moods, and decisions within the same photographic project.
