Sometimes you cannot quite tell what you are looking at. Is it peace? Or is there simply nothing there? I stood in this place after the wind had settled. The light was soft, the sky heavy. Before me stood a few old posts, coarse grass and a slope. Nothing more. And yet I stopped.
What does an image like this stir in us? Some people see emptiness. Others sense exactly what they have been missing: stillness, focus, something enduring.
I often long for peace myself. Perhaps that is why I perceive places like this as quiet, comforting and clear. Where others see emptiness, I often feel a sense of arrival. There is finally nothing demanding my attention.
Every photographer perceives a place differently. What one person experiences as wide and open feels abandoned or oppressive to another. A camera never shows only what is there. It also shows how we stand in that place and how we look at it.
For me, there was peace here. Not an easy peace, but a real one. No decorative tranquillity, just something that no longer needs to defend itself.
The posts were still standing, but they no longer held anything. No fence, no boundary. Only the memory of an order that once existed. Now only the present remained.
The distance from the water made this stillness even stronger. The coast lay far below me. No wind, no voices, no breaking waves. Just the horizon.
I developed the photograph in black and white, not to dramatise, but to simplify. I allowed the light and shadow to remain. Peace does not come simply when everything is quiet. It comes when nothing has to struggle any more. That is what I found here. No destination, no departure. Just being.
Is that emptiness? Or exactly the opposite? I do not know. Perhaps true peace only becomes possible when something has been allowed to empty out. Perhaps the strength of an image lies not in what it shows, but in what it leaves open.
For me, this photograph was exactly that.
