The Fisherman's House

Red Norwegian fisherman's house on a stone wall reflected in smooth water beneath a bright sky

SELECTED WORK · PHOTOGRAPHY FROM NORWAY

It is just a house beside the water. And yet it seems to stand between two realities. Above the red timber, a broad, almost empty sky opens up. Below it, a second house appears in the water, just as still and, for a moment, almost as real.

Between Two Worlds

I spent a long time looking at this reflection. Every line finds its answer beneath the surface, every window a counterpart. The house seems to be looking at itself. So much space remains around it that even stillness takes on a form.

Perhaps that is where the magic of this photograph lies. We see something familiar and only realise on looking again how quickly our perception can become uncertain. What is solid, and what is fleeting? The water changes its image with every movement. For a brief moment, it seems to want to preserve everything.

Behind the Work

The photography project explores the reflection, the open space and the deliberate reduction to a few forms.
