Stillness in the Water

Dark green moss-covered stones surrounded by smooth long-exposure water on a Norwegian beach

SELECTED WORK · PHOTOGRAPHY FROM NORWAY

A few stones lie on the beach, surrounded by water and covered in green moss. A muted sky hangs above them. Nothing pushes itself into the foreground. And that is precisely why my gaze lingers on these unassuming forms.

When the Sea Grows Quieter

The long exposure has taken the visible restlessness out of the water. It looks like a delicate veil around the stones, which rest motionless in the expanse. Each seems to have found its own place, without any arrangement that needs explaining.

What moves me here is the idea of something that remains while everything else passes by. Perhaps each of these stones holds the memory of countless waves. Almost none of it is visible. Yet this quiet landscape contains a sense of time that reaches far beyond the moment.

Behind the Work

In the photography project, I describe how movement can be transformed into calm and why unassuming stones can become the centre of a photograph.
