Returning

Sometimes, as a photographer, you feel you have to keep moving. Look for new places. Find new subjects. See new landscapes.
Yet perhaps some photographs are made precisely where you've stood before.

This photograph was taken at a place on the Atlantic coast I know well. I've been there many times. Down by the water, close to the rocks, close to the movement of the sea.

This time, I stepped further back. A little higher onto the rocks. To a place where the coastline revealed itself not just as a fleeting moment, but as a form.

The sky was almost empty. Nothing dramatic. No clouds to carry the image.

And perhaps that was exactly right.

The sky grew still. The rocks seemed heavier. The water calmer. The long exposure took some of the restlessness out of the surf and revealed something else.

Lines. Edges. Time.

Perhaps that is what returning means. Not simply going back to the same place, but being open enough to see it differently.

Because sometimes a photograph doesn't need a new place.
