The First Signs

In recent weeks, I've been spending more time at higher elevations again. In the Norwegian highlands, the first changes are already beginning to show.

Autumn is on its way. Among heather, moss, and low shrubs, the first warm browns and reds are appearing. The air feels clearer, the light grows softer, and morning mist lingers longer over the landscape.

This photograph carries that particular mood for me, too.
A single tree stands in the broad mountain landscape. Behind it, outlines slowly disappear into the mist. The sun is little more than a pale, diffuse glow. Its light seeps faintly through the grey, giving the landscape a quiet, almost unreal quality.

I like this brief time of transition.
Up here, the seasons change slowly. First a colour shifts. Then the light. The air grows cooler, and the mist begins to claim parts of the landscape again.

These are precisely the conditions that fascinate me as a photographer.

The landscape reveals less, leaving more room for imagination. Mountains lose their outlines, distances blur, and even a single tree can suddenly seem like a silent observer.

Perhaps it is these small changes that keep drawing me outdoors.

Summer can still be felt. Yet the landscape has already begun to change.

The first signs are already here.

  2. Lovely photo and thoughts.

    1. Thank you very much, John. I’m glad you like both the photo and the thoughts behind it.

  3. Great photo!
I also love experiencing the transition from one season to the next.

    1. Thank you very much for your comment. There is something very special about the transition from one season to the next. The landscape changes quietly at first, almost unnoticed, and then suddenly you can feel that a new season is coming.

    1. Danke dir, Anne.
