Autumn seems to have overlooked something.
Among the bare branches hung a single leaf. Orange, almost golden, and so small in the dark tangle that I nearly walked past it. The other leaves were long gone. Only this one seemed unwilling to accept the farewell.
I had to smile. The wind had done a rather thorough job. All around, the branches stood bare, as though they had already left autumn behind. And there was this little latecomer, hanging on as if none of it concerned it.
In the photograph, the leaf is the only colour that really holds its ground. The branches trace fine, dark lines across the frame. Behind them, the forest fades into a soft, almost black background. There is not much to see. That is exactly what appealed to me.
I deliberately left the leaf small in the composition. I wanted to give it space and show how alone it hangs among the empty branches. The warm orange only becomes so striking because of the darkness around it. Against a brighter background or a mass of colourful leaves, I might never have noticed it.
Perhaps that is what keeps drawing me to subjects like this. A large forest offers countless possibilities, yet sometimes a single leaf is enough to make me stop. A small departure from the familiar. Something that should perhaps have disappeared already, but is still holding its place.
Of course, it would be easy to find a grand story in it. About holding on, letting go and the courage to be different. Perhaps even about how difficult it can be to say goodbye to something that once felt permanent.
But I also like a far simpler thought: perhaps this leaf simply got stuck. Nature does not have to offer us a life lesson with every little detail.
Even so, the sight stays with me. It reminds me how easily we overlook small things once we think we understand a landscape. A bare tree is just a bare tree. Autumn is over. The picture seems complete.
Until a tiny trace of colour appears somewhere and changes everything.
Autumn had taken almost every leaf with it. This one, it seems, was forgotten.
That suited me rather well.
