An early morning on the coast of central Norway. The sun was already high and bathing the surroundings in harsh light. Yet deep among the rocks, this particular place lay in shadow, quiet, cool and shielded from direct daylight. Between two dark rock faces, a massive boulder had become wedged, motionless as though it had held its position for centuries.
Subjects like this have fascinated me for some time. Fine Art photography is a central part of my work at the moment: clearly composed images in which light, form and atmosphere take centre stage. This subject fits that approach perfectly, reduced, graphic and full of tension.
The long exposure turned the water into a calm surface, almost as soft as mist. In contrast stands the coarse, solid rock. That interplay of opposites is something I keep returning to.
The composition is deliberately restrained. The wedged boulder forms the central element, enclosed by dark rock walls and opening into bright emptiness beyond. The scene feels both enclosed and open.
Although I took the photograph in strong sunshine, the subject itself lay in soft, indirect light. That was ideal for revealing the fine textures of the rock without harsh contrasts. In editing, I focused on keeping the light natural: clear, calm and understated.

Amazing! I wouldn’t get under it though…

But I did. First, very quickly, and then a little slower to take a closer look…
