Last Saturday morning I set out for the Atlantic coast before sunrise. As always, I had carefully checked the weather, the tides and the light. My aim was to arrive at low tide, when the rocks briefly reveal themselves.
It was quiet. No wind, hardly a sound, only the distant, gentle breathing of the Atlantic. When the sun rose, it bathed the coastline in warm light. The rock began to glow, and lines and shapes emerged as though they had been drawn.
That day my attention was entirely on the rock: gneiss, granite and slate, shaped by pressure, heat and ice. Their surfaces hold fractures, glacial traces and deformations that tell of powerful geological processes.
Some subjects reveal themselves from a distance; others show their beauty only close up. I changed focal lengths, following the light, shadow and form. Every moment was quiet, yet full of history.
Structures of the Coast is a photographic exploration of the language of rock, a series about time, texture and change, and about the quiet stories that can emerge only when everything else falls silent.
