Stillness Has No Shape

Sometimes a landscape loses its outlines. Not everything is clear. Not everything can be grasped.

The mountains stand one behind another. Soft. Without sharp boundaries.
The mist takes away their harshness while giving them depth.

I stand there and feel everything grow quiet. No detail distracts me. Nothing demands attention.

It is no longer about what you can see, but what you can feel. And this is where the way I photograph begins to change.

I no longer look for a clear foreground. Not for leading lines. Not for a fixed subject. I let the landscape speak for itself. Depth does not come from sharpness, but from layers receding into the distance. From light and space.

Each layer grows lighter. Quieter. More distant.

I deliberately simplify. Leave room. Remove everything that might disturb the image.

The real subject is not a mountain. It is the interplay of mist, light, and distance.
And somewhere in between, a photograph emerges that needs no explanation.

Perhaps that is the point at which photography itself becomes still.

    1. Sorry — WP Reader flipped to the next post when trying to leave a comment, so the above is not quite appropriate. It is nonetheless a beautiful image! ✨

  4. Very beautiful! It reminds me of landscapes I have seen in the Alien movie series on planet LV426.

    1. Thank you, John. I like that comparison. These landscapes often feel a bit otherworldly and untouched.

  6. Beautiful scene!

    1. Thank you for your comment, Anne.
It was such a calm and beautiful scene, and I’m glad you like it.
