Behind My Photographs

A finished photograph rarely shows how much happened before I pressed the shutter. You see the light, the shapes, perhaps a single wave. What you don't see is how long I spent looking for the right framing, or how many settings I tried and abandoned along the way.

I'd like to share a little more of that side of my photography.

The Practical Side

When I'm out with my camera, I often have to make very practical choices. Which lens suits the scene? Do I need an ND filter? How long can I expose the frame before the water loses the texture I'm after? And when is it better to put the camera away and walk a little farther?

The camera doesn't make those decisions for me. But I need to know what it can do if I'm going to use it deliberately. That's where technique and composition meet.

What I'll Be Sharing

Here I'll write about the equipment I actually use, the settings I choose, and what I've learned from working with them. Long exposures on the Atlantic coast, macro photography with controlled light, and those small technical questions that can take a surprisingly long time to sort out outdoors.

Lightroom Classic is part of it too. I'll show how I assess a RAW file, where I draw attention with light, and why I prefer to leave other areas in shadow. Practical steps and real decisions, not a ready-made recipe for every photograph.

And of course, not every attempt works. A blurred frame, the wrong shutter speed, or an edit I later undo is just as much a part of the process as the finished photograph.

Thoughts & Stories Will Continue

I'll still write in the journal about nature, learning to see, and the thoughts behind a photograph. This new section adds the part of the story that usually happens outside the frame.

A quiet photograph can sometimes come out of a rather hectic hour. Wind, wet hands, and the familiar question of why the filter is always somewhere other than where I need it.
