Fragments of the Forest

Von Sonnenlicht beleuchteter Baumstamm in dunklem Wald, FineArt-Fotografie aus dem Projekt Fragmente des Waldes.

That morning, I went into the forest without a particular subject in mind. I wanted to look for light. The sun was still low, sending its first rays between the trees. Little patches of brightness appeared everywhere. Some vanished after only a few seconds. Others moved slowly across the forest floor, over moss, bark, and branches.
Over the course of the trip, I made several photographs.

Small fragments. Brief encounters between light and darkness.

At the same time, I also made a video. Ich wollte nicht nur die fertigen Bilder zeigen, sondern auch den Weg dorthin. Die Suche. Das Beobachten. Die Entscheidungen vor dem Auslösen. Denn genau dort beginnt für mich die eigentliche Fotografie.

This photograph belongs to one of those moments.
At first glance, there is not much to see. A tree trunk. A narrow strip of light. Almost nothing but blackness in between.
Anyone who had seen the forest that morning would have experienced something very different. It was full of details, colours and shapes. And that was precisely the photographic challenge.

It was not about adding something. It was about allowing things to disappear.

I made this photograph with a 100 mm lens. That focal length gives me enough distance from the subject while helping me concentrate the composition. The decisive choice, however, was the exposure.
By deliberately stopping down and choosing the exposure, I could allow large parts of the forest to disappear into darkness. What had still been visible at the scene became space in the photograph. Stillness. Darkness.
Only the elements that mattered to the photograph remained.
The trunk. The strip of light. The tension between the two.

That is what fascinates me about Fine Art photography.

The world does not grow larger. It becomes smaller, more reduced, more clearly defined.
You do not show everything that was there. You show only what should remain.
Perhaps that is why I call them fragments of the forest. Not a complete description of a place, but individual moments that briefly emerged from the darkness.

And perhaps that is also why this project does not feel finished to me yet.

That morning was only the beginning. More photographs will follow. More fragments. More encounters with light, shadow and the little things we so easily overlook.

That is why these photographs are gradually becoming a project of their own on my website, where I will gather further work, thoughts and observations. The camera was recording that morning, too.

Because sometimes it is not only the finished photograph that tells a story, but the path that led to it. The search. The watching. The waiting for a single patch of light between the trees.

Perhaps those are the moments when photographs truly begin.

  1. Tolle Reduktion!

    1. Danke dir, Horst! Solche Motive machen immer wieder Spaß.

  2. You are brave, I wouldn’t venture into the wood before daylight. Light and dark is what photography is about.

    1. Thank you, John. I have to admit, the forest feels very different before daylight, but that is also part of what draws me there. And you are absolutely right, light and dark are at the heart of photography.
