The sun was still there. It stood low in the sky to my left, just before disappearing. And yet I felt no light. I was exhausted. The descent had begun, and the trail ahead was long, uneven and demanding. Inside, I felt weakness rather than clarity. Instead of relief, there was a quiet sense of threat, because I knew the way would take time and strength.
I could have brightened the photograph, opened up the shadows, shown the rocks more clearly and brought the light back. But that would not have been honest, because that is not how the moment felt. I wanted to show what it was like for me, not what it looked like technically.
Had I taken this photograph at the start of the mountain walk, on my way up, full of energy, curiosity and momentum, I would probably have developed it more brightly. The light would have been inside me too. But at the end it was different, and so the picture had to be different.
How Dark Can a Photograph Be?
Dark enough to carry a feeling. Dark enough to show the mood rather than the landscape.
I left the blacks deep. Not as a stylistic trick, but as an expression. Photography is not just technique. It is a decision.
And sometimes that means the light was there, but it never reached me.

An amazing image, I’m glad you didn’t brighten it. It looks like another planet!
