Wind, Water and Stone

A strong westerly wind was blowing that day. The sea was restless, with waves crashing against the coast. Yet the long exposure creates an entirely different impression: the wild water suddenly looks calm, almost like a soft veil lying over the stones.

The stones themselves lie heavy and motionless in the water, as if they have been there for centuries. Some are smooth, others angular, yet all withstand the constant movement of wind and waves. The large rock on the right is particularly striking. It draws the eye almost automatically and gives the composition a clear centre.

The sky plays an important part too. The clouds appear to be moving almost directly towards me. Their direction strengthens the sense of movement, even though the photograph itself feels still. This line adds tension to the composition and guides the eye across the image towards the horizon.

In the foreground, dry grass offers a pleasing contrast to the cool colours of the water. It ensures that the picture is more than water and stone, giving it a firm anchor in the landscape.

This image combines the force of nature with quiet observation. It shows how even a stormy day on the coast can become a calm, almost meditative photograph if you take the time to look.
