Where the Mountains Meet the Atlantic

There are landscapes where mountains and sea lie far apart.

Not here.

In parts of Norway, the mountains and the Atlantic stand so close together that the boundary between them almost disappears. Dark water meets rugged rock. Steep slopes seem to rise straight out of the sea beneath a heavy sky.

It is this closeness that makes these coastal landscapes so compelling to me.

The Atlantic feels open, deep, almost endless. The mountains, by contrast, stand firm and heavy in the landscape. Two entirely different worlds meet here.

Yet neither exists independently of the other.

Wind sweeps across the open water and strikes the mountainsides. Clouds linger between the peaks. The sea shapes the coast, while the light can change in a matter of minutes.

On this day, the landscape felt especially dramatic. The water was dark. The mountains lay heavy beneath the clouds, and only at the horizon did the sky open a little. There was just enough light to reveal certain details in the mountains, while other areas vanished almost completely into shadow.

These are exactly the conditions I enjoy photographing in.

I don't need every part of a landscape to be visible. What disappears into darkness, or can only be guessed at, can give a photograph its depth.

These landscapes have fascinated me for a long time. In my article “Barren Landscapes – The Photographic Power of Reduction” I explore why rugged, pared-back landscapes can carry so much photographic expression.

At times, it feels as though the Atlantic is pushing further into the land, while the mountains stand silently against it.

Perhaps that is only my imagination. But standing there, facing the immense mountains of Norway's coast, it is easy to feel that you have reached a boundary.

On one side, the open sea.

On the other, solid rock.

And between them, that fleeting moment when two worlds meet.

  1. Lieber Dirk,

Solche Landschaften sprechen irgendwie dieselbe Sprache. Viele Grüße !
