A single lighthouse, far out on a rock in the Atlantic. Not somewhere you would reach by chance. Only water, wind and a stillness settling over everything. This is where I made this series: reduced, focused, in both black and white and colour.
I often seek out places like this. Remote, empty, without people. Because something becomes visible there that is lost elsewhere.
Here on this quiet stretch of coast, there was only the wind, the sound of waves and that one point on the horizon: a lighthouse that says little yet tells a whole story. To me it is more than a building. It is presence, form and direction.
I photographed it at focal lengths between 100 and 400 mm. Sometimes small within the vast landscape, almost lost. Sometimes close and strong. Long exposures softened the water, stilled the air and made the light seem to flow.
Most of the images in this series were made in black and white, stripping away everything unnecessary. Only one remained in colour, like a quiet contrast, a quotation of light.
What remains is a photograph that explains nothing but suggests everything. One lighthouse, alone, firm and silent. A solitary guardian held in the light by shadow.

Danke dir, Horst!
